The “Istituto Nazionale di Oceanografia e di Geofisica Sperimentale” (National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics – OGS) is a public research institution under the remit of Italy’s Ministry of Education, University and Research, which operates internationally in the fields of Earth and Sea Sciences, Oceanography, Geophysics and Seismology, to contribute to the protection and enhancement of natural and environmental resources, to assess and prevent geological, environmental and climatic risks and to disseminate scientific knowledge and culture.
the OGS applies its experience in research concerning the environment and climate, biodiversity and ecosystem functionality, as well as to the study, for purposes of civil protection, of the seismic, hydrodynamic and geodynamic phenomena that have an impact on the environment and on the population..

 

HOW TO GET THERE:
BY CAR
From Venice / Udine, via the A4 motorway (Venice – 150 Km; Marco Polo Airport – 142 Km; Udine – 67 Km; Trieste Airport – 32 Km): after the toll gate (Lisert tollgate) continue along the motorway until the SGONICO exit, then follow the signs for the Grotta Gigante and OGS (brown road signs).

From Trieste / Ljubljana, via the motorway towards Venice (Ljubljana – 100 Km, Brnik Airport – 115 Km), take the exit at the PROSECCO junction; pass under the bridge and turn left immediately at the junction (opposite the Lanza shopping area) and left again, following the signs for Grotta Gigante and OGS (brown road sign).

From the centre of Trieste, take the main road that leads to Opicina (Via Fabio Severo – University – Strada Nuova per Opicina – SS14 – SS58) and after arriving on the Karst plateau, at the first roundabout turn left towards VENEZIA (SS 202), proceed for about 5 Km; at the first intersection (at Centro Lanza, shortly after the tunnel) turn left and then left again, following the signs for Grotta Gigante and OGS (brown road sign).

BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT
By bus, route no. 42 (Trieste, piazza Oberdan – Opicina) to the Borgo Grotta Gigante stop; Note: check the time on the website

By train: to Trieste Centrale station, then take bus 42 (terminus in Piazza Oberdan, 800 metres from the station); alternatively by bus 4 (terminus in the same square) to Opicina and successively (about 4 km) by route 42 or by taxi.

VISIT:
The visits are mainly organised for school students of various types and levels.
On the basis of the didactic requirements, the topics chosen by the school and a contact with the teachers, a visit to one or other of the OGS sites is planned, where seminars and visits to the laboratories are organised.
An open day for the public is arranged periodically.

Depending on the site chosen, groups range from 25 to 50 students
